Well, we are officially four days in and I feel as though, even before classes have begun, I’ve learned A LOT.

For instance, I should probably be wearing two shirts, two pairs of socks AND have multiples of everything because it can take a little while to figure out a washer and dryer in Dutch (unless that’s just me, hey I’ll cop that).

I’ve learned that the one inch gap between the top of my boots and the bottom of my rolled up jeans is enough to ruin my entire life, and rolling them down is definitely the most practical option. Not as aesthetic, but in instances such as European winter, it seems that practicality must trump all.

Us Australians, Brisbanites in particular I’m thinking, wouldn’t know a real winter until it hits us in the face, much like it does as you walk out of the safety of the warm airport. I’ve decided that a Queensland winter prepares you for a European winter just as high school prepares you for university- it doesn’t.

The history, particularly from the World Wars still ensures its presence, with looming clock towers chiming simply to remind you that you were lucky enough to be here now and not in 1942. The churches relay the incredulous message of time, and that through the years, despite the awful things the walls may witness, they lay silent, providing sanctuary and hope for all those who walk through the front door.

I’ve learned lots of things about lots of people and I look forward to furthering new friendships. What a bunch, what a trip.

Stay tuned for more adventures!

These are a few of my favourite things:
Hi! I’m Emily! Twenty-one, foodie, fitness fanatic, psychology undergraduate. I am SO ready to bring my hobbies with me (along with a puffer jacket, a scarf and boots) over to Europe from good ol’ Brisbane. I am SO looking forward to studying positive psychology (it’s one of my faves), to eating stamppot, and to not being in 31 degree heat at 7am- thanks Aus!
