It’s hard to believe that we are already one-third through our way in our uni course – it feels like we only just got here! But Florence is starting to feel familiar and homely, and so much has happened in this short amount of time. We are lucky to be staying in a hotel so close to the city centre and to our uni - it’s about a 15-minute walk, which serves us well since we’ve consumed so much pizza and pasta since we got here!
Most of us arrived the weekend before the course started, and dove right into exploring this beautiful city. Our first night out in Florence saw us stumble upon a quaint, classically Italian eatery, where we dined upon pizza and wine. We also got a free language lesson from our waiter!
Sunday and Monday morning left us free to wander the city as we pleased. We decided to walk around the city and simply explore, as well as pay a visit to the Museo Galileo. The museum was extremely interesting and rich with history – it was unbelievable to see how old some of the objects in the museum were. The museum also held one crazy artifact – Galileo’s fingers!
Tuesday saw us officially start our course, with a field trip to the Pitti Uomo, a fashion festival primarily dedicated to menswear. This was Florence’s version of fashion week – in addition to multiple runway shows, the fair mainly focused on creating an immersive experience for anyone and everyone to partake. Perhaps the most fascinating sight through the whole fair was the high amount of people who simply stood or sat around for hours, striking all sorts of poses in hopes of being photographed!
Our second day brought even more excitement – we were given the opportunity to be dressers for a menswear fashion show as part of an event celebrating Korean designers. Naturally, most of us were excited to not only get a glimpse of the busyness and chaotic scenes backstage at a fashion show, but to also dress some truly beautiful models! It turned out to be a lot more stressful and hectic than we initially expected but luckily everything went off without a hitch.
Since Thursday and Friday saw us spend all our time in class, most of us decided a weekend trip to Milan was necessary. That’s the beauty of Italy – so many gorgeous cities to explore, all within a couple of hours of each other. It was a prime time to visit Milan, as Milan Fashion Week was underway and the impressive street style was turned all the way up.
Week 1 was insanely eventful and busy – cannot wait to see what Week 2 has in store for us!
