Week two beings with my 20th Birthday. I was nervous coming on this trip having it be my birthday when my family is on the other side of the world and I am surrounded with people I had only just met. It turned out to be one of the best days on this trip so far.
During the day, we had conferences with experts in Business, whom I had learned a lot from. Later in the evening, we were having a taco truck come to the hotel so everyone could have tacos to celebrate the occasion. When walking back inside from receiving my tacos, I was surprised by everyone with a birthday satchel and crown, cake and a piñata. I honestly wasn’t even expecting anything from these people as they had only known me for a week at this point. Having the people in my course go out of their way to make me feel cared about on my birthday made me realise this experience has given me genuine friendships. That evening ended with all the girls hanging out in my hotel room, eating American treats and having conversations getting to know one another on a more intimate level. I went to sleep that night thinking about the people that I have met through this experience. Those are the memories I will never forget, as we will all have this bond in life taking on the AIM 2018 Business course together. Coming into this alone on a 15-hour plane ride, and leaving with 18 new friendships is priceless.
The rest of the week consisted of back to back classes, as we lost class time due to last week’s snow. This week, I learned a lot about my personality through the class work. We were learning about communication skills and personality traits. I have come out of this week knowing myself more and feeling more secure with who I am as a person; socially and professionally. The education I have received throughout this course has not only been about business and leadership; but about self-discovery, providing us with the real knowledge on how to become the best versions of ourselves.
At this point, it’s been an action packed week of filled with assignments and agendas in Charlotte. As the weekday comes to an end, the free weekend approaches. My plan, was New York City. Friday night came around and on the plane I went, along with six others in the program. This was my first time going to New York and it has been a dream of mine to visit for as long as I can remember. Having the opportunity to go whilst on this trip I am so grateful, as coming to America from Melbourne is an expensive trip for the average 20-year-old. New York consisted of minimal sleep, as we wanted to see as much of it as we could in the free weekend. We stayed in Brooklyn and began with the site seeing and exploring from there. New York, you were everything and more and I will definitely be back soon.
This week was one week in my life I will never forget. The people I have met, the things I have learned and the places I have been in just seven days was irreplaceable.
"I believe this program provides a great opportunity to see how sustainability principles and theories are being put into practice. Every place is important, with its own culture and resources. Minnesota is a unique place. It is the birthplace of the mighty Mississippi River, and home to prairies, woods, lakes, and abundant wind, sun, and productive soils. We are creating a low-carbon future here in Minnesota with our state policy and our renewable energy implementation. Students will get to see many renewable energy technologies up close. We are also home to unique people, including the Native Americans who were here long before the first Europeans settled in the state. Students will get to see how all of these ingredients mix together to create sustainable stew. I believe students will be inspired by their visit to Minnesota and will leave with many ideas about how they can create change in whatever place they call home."
